Demag Cranes sets up plant at Chakan
Cranes and components maker Demag Cranes has expanded production capacity by setting up a manufacturing plant at Chakan.
The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Germany-based Demag Cranes AG, has invested €8 million to expand capacity from 400 standard cranes per annum to 600 units and an additional 100 process cranes.
“This plant is now the largest in the emerging markets, and also the largest outside of Europe,” Mr Thomas Hagen, Chief Operating Officer, Demag group, said.
Elaborating on the plans for India, Mr Suhas Baxi, Managing Director, said, “We will now offer a 100-kg to 250-tonne range for material handling. This will allow us to compete and increase market share in India.”
Adding that the company also addressed after-market and servicing needs, he said, “Refurbishment will take us to a new level.”
The cranes market in India is pegged at around Rs 2,000 crore annually and growing at 20 per cent. Demag India has a 5 per cent share in the process cranes business, 10 per cent in standard cranes and 25 per cent in the movement automation technology business, he added.
